Estate Planning 101 (EP 101)

This class on the fundamentals of estate planning answers the questions:

What is a will? What is probate? What is a trust? How do I protect my property from predators, creditors and the IRS? How do I plan for disability? How do I avoid estate taxes in light of the current complicated situation?

It also clears up some common misconceptions about estate planning such as: 1) Everybody needs a will, and 2) My estate plan is complete once my will is signed. The class is informative, engaging and free.

It is useful for: 1) people who are thinking about doing their estate planning; 2) financial and insurance advisors of clients with estate planning needs; 3) people who want to review their existing plan; 4) helpers and family members of our clients;and 5) anyone who wants to learn more about what it takes to make an estate plan work.

The class is made up of two two-hour sections. Attendees are free to attend the first section (Rules for creating an estate plan that works) or the second (Tools for dealing with probate, disability and taxes), or both sections.

Business Exit Planning (BEP 101)

Sooner or later, everyone leaves their business -- either horizontally or vertically. Achieving a smooth vertical exit requires education, counseling, creation of a professional team, funding and maintenance -- just like any other estate plan.

In Business Exit Planning 101, business owners learn to think of their business as an asset, not just a job, and to lay the foundation for a successful exit from the business. The class identifies some of the overlooked problems, and introduces a system to avoid those problems.

JCC Kid's Choice February School Vacation Program

Kids rule at the JCC! During the JCC Kids Choice February school vacation program, February 20-24, children in grades K-6 choose what they want to do each day.

The daily choice of electives includes sports, swimming, arts and crafts, dance, drama, cooking, board games and rock wall climbing. Held at the Leventhal-Sidman JCC (333 Nahanton Street) in Newton from 9am-4pm with early drop off and extended day available.

Special activities are planned each including a seeing a performance by Doktor Kaboom!, playing krazy kickball, a trip to the Wheelock Family Theater to see The Wizard of Oz, snowman building (if there is enough snow) and playing The Match Game (game show).

Cost is $400 for all five days for JCC members or $500/week for nonmembers for registrations received before January 30 ($455/$555 thereafter). Come for one day or as many days as you would like. (Per day costs range from $85-$105 for members and $105-$115 for nonmembers.) Lunch is available from Dushez Cafe at the JCC for an additional charge.

Gedman Baseball Clinic at JCC in Newton

Children ages 6-12 can fine-tune their hitting, fielding, throwing, catching and base running skills in preparation for the Spring Little League season at a four-week baseball clinic at the Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center (333 Nahanton Street) in Newton.

The clinic, run by professionals from the Rich Gedman Baseball program, will take place on four consecutive Sundays beginning March 4 from 5-7pm. Cost per clinic is $65 per session or $240 for all four sessions for registrations received by February 21.

Our projectors and players are conditioned on a regular basis - your precious media is completely safe on our equipment. (PLEASE do not play your aging and fragile tapes and films on dusty projectors you drag out of the attic!) We are also here in person to help you answer any questions you may have about your VHS tapes, VCR, Hi8 tapes or your 8mm film reels, Super 8, or even 16mm film reels that went out of favor over 40 years ago.

It's fun to come into our store. You'll feel like you stepped back into your grandparents' living room. We have film projectors to play your Regular 8mm or Super8, or 16mm film. We have VHS-C cartridges for your VHS-Compact tapes. Did you stumble upon old vinyl LP records your dad sent love voice recordings to your mom? Hear them in our record player right here in the store. Your tape still stuck in your camcorder from way back when? Embarassing! Let us rescue your tape.

Mapping Your World: A Vacation Week Family Program

Every February, during Boston's school vacation week, The Mary Baker Eddy Library hosts free entertaining and educational programs for youth ages 17 and under from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Library programs are designed to provide families with fun experiences, new insights about Mary Baker Eddy and the Library's collections, and to maximize the value of museum-based learning.

Visit The Mary Baker Eddy Library for 'Mapping My Wold', an interactive program that teaches children to look at maps in a new way, including the world-famous Mapparium®. Various activities will touch upon key skills of making and reading maps, highlight the history of mapmaking, and share about Mary Baker Eddy's life, time period, and personal travels.

Families are also invited to tour the Library's five main exhibit galleries where they can experience how the power of ideas has inspired individuals and changed the world.

During all school vacation week programs, showings of 'Big Blue Earth' are featured in the Mapparium. And don't forget to check out the Library's annual special exhibit 'Finding Peace' before it closes on March 18!
